If RV sales could be considered a leading economic indicator, then it appears things are rolling in the right direction.

Sales are up, despite a shaky economy.

"Vacations are expensive with hotel stays, with an RV you can take a trip more economically," said prospective RV buyer Steven Weber, while checking out an RV at a lot in Palm Desert.

Weber and his wife Marieann are among the many Americans looking to hit the road, and while doing so, adding a bit of fuel to the economy.

In fact the world's largest manufacturer of Recreational Vehicles, Thor Industries, they say their revenue for the fiscal year just completed was nearly $2.3 billion dollars.

That is up 50 percent compared to the same time last year.

"I think people have a lot of pent up enthusiasm about getting out and getting away," said Glenn Elsing, General Manager of McMahon's RV in Palm Desert.

Elsing says he opened his doors three years ago, one of the worst years for the RV industry.

He says now they're on track for their best year ever.

The GM says they're on pace this year to outpace last year's sales by 12 to 15 percent.

For automakers, the picture shows improvement as well, with GM just reporting second quarter net income of $1.5 billion dollars.

Whether cars or recreational vehicles, anything to keep the economy rolling.

In short: RV Sales are up despite the Economy Being Down
